Focusing Problem - 08-05-2009, 06:15 PM

Hi everyone I've been having some problems with focusing. It seems to happen mostly when I use my Nikon 24mm-70mm lens. On my last shoot I made sure that I was shooting at a high shutter speed (1/125) I was at f4 and I was at 70mm. Im making sure that my focus point is right on the eyes and then shoot. Using these settings I feel like my auto focus should be accurate but Im still getting fuzzy images. I do have some sharp photos with this lens but I often get these type of soft focus images. The image to me looks like the subject was moving and I was shooting at 1/30. Does anyone have a recomendation or some advice. Im not sure what Im doing wrong, or could it be the lens? Im shooting with Nikon D3 24mm-70mm 2.8. Thanks for any help. Im attaching a photo that shows what Im talking about.

It looks like slight camera motion. Do you gently squeeze the shutter release like firing a gun?

Im not sure how I hit the shutter. I will certainly pay more attention to that next time. I find that I have more crisp focus with my 70mm-200mm or my 50mm. I still get this sometimes when Im zoomed in at 200mm but I figure that is b/c Im at 200mm. But when Im at 70mm I would think that that wouldnt be an issue. I've never been cautious when I push the shutter I did not think that would cause enough motion at 1/125 but on my next shoot I will make sure that I do that. Thanks for your quick response.

You might try a few test shots with a tripod. That should help isolate any movement if there is some.
