Custom Functions on 50D - 08-11-2009, 09:42 PM

I just got a 50D after my 30D got trashed. I was using custom function 4 on my 30D to focus using the * (AE lock?) and then using the shutter release button to actually take the the photo.

I can't seem to figure out which option on custom function 4 will do this on my 50D.

Thanks for your help!

Do you have your manual? Look at the first few pages and it should give you a diagram of the back of the camera the diagram usually has an arrow and a page number pointed to it.

I swear the manual is written in Greek. I actually tried each of the options under custom function 4 and none of them did what I expected.

Anyone else focus this way with a 50D that can enlighten me?

It may be under a new function number. If you can find the page of the manual that has all the buttons pointedto by a page number I think you couldjust turn to that page for the instructions.

I will look it up for you.

Call Canon, 866-481-2569 and ask someone in Tech Support.
They've been very helpful...

It might be the C.Fn IV-1 #3. AE lock/metering + AF start.

I think Lonnie is right. There are pics of the 50D's custom function menus here.

Not that this will help, but on all of my Canon bodies it's custom function 4, select "1."

Lonnie has the right function to shift the focus function from the Shutter Button to the AF ON button on the back of the camera. C.Fn IV-2 must be used to swap the functions of the AF ON and the * buttons. Enabling IV-2 will move the focus function to the * button IF IV-1 is set to menu item 3. It will then function like your 30D did.

Oops! Wrong button. I use the AF on to focus.

Thank you -- this is exactly what I needed! I appreciate it!
