As a new photographer (relatively, anyways), I have heard two different thoughts about filters on my lenses. One is to use one to protect my lens. The second is that a lens filter takes a LOT of light away from your shot and makes things more difficult to get a good picture in terms of exposure.

I would love to hear from some seasoned photographers what they do.
