Capturing gunfire? - 08-24-2009, 11:16 PM

I know this may be a crazy question, but I am shooting (with my Nikon) at an indoor shooting range in the morning, and I thought it would be cool to try to capture a gunshot. Has anyone here tried this? Any tips?
I'm thinking longest exposure posible without blowing it out, while getting the shooter to signal before he pulls the trigger.
I don't know, sounds far fetched, what do you think?

Thanks , that's just what I was looking for. I did a search before posting , but I didn't try "muzzle" fire.

Been there and done it. Put camera on full auto and fire away at the command.

Fire! said the Color Sargent.

The first rifleman hammer is still in the cock position. Still there is muzzle fire, had to look twice, it is the second guy that had just fired.
Cool picture.
This summer when I was up in Alaska, I used continuous mode for the first time shooting whales. You can use a lot of frames, but so what it is digital.

Exactly, get all your settings however it is you want for exposure and all.
Then set your camera to burst mode.

It also varies on if you are shooting an individual or a group.

I will hold the burst between shots and leave it down for a few shots.

I also had to get my tripod. After looking back through the first couple of series of bursts, almost every shot was blurrry from camera shake. I was about 6 ft from him in the down range shots, and man was it loud!
Here's a few of the shots. (I darkened the officer's face for his privacy)
