Kelly, one easy way to overcome this problem is put your camera on "P" (Program mode), pop up the flash and take the photo. See if that helps.

I think that's moving in the opposite direction of understanding the issue at hand - my suggestion is to learn your camera it's features then shoot in Manual and learn to (manually) bracket shots.

That is a lot of responses.

The background exposure for a Canon shooter should be about ISO 100, F16, and 60th a second.

The people are standing in a f5.6 to F8 light. To get them up to the F16 background you need to get more light on them. A flash is a great way to do that. But not to much or else it will look like flash.

If you want to have some fun with the over exposed image. Open it in photoshop and create several layers of the same image and multiply the layers until you get something cool looking.
