This may sound strange but I can not get my camera to do more than 1/250??? I don't understand why. It just won't move up anymore than that. Does anyone know how to fix that? On the new Canon 7d that I have it has a new view. It is a button with a Q on it and when you press the button it brings up all your info (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, AI Servo, ect...) on the screen. It is one of my favorite features on the camera. Much easier than using the one at the top. Anyway, if anyone knows how to fix this I would love to hear it!! | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. Yes, it would go higher without the flash. Look in your manual for "sync speed."
In the 7D Manual look at pg. 117 and potentially at hi-speed sync. But with hi-speed your flash throws a shorter distance. (Assumes an external flash is used. Since you said "down" I assume you're using the on-board flash. I'd think in this case that is more a hindrance. Put it down and see if you can crank up the speed.)

Those settings helped me.

Wow, 6400 ISO 250 @2.8, you are shooting on a dark field. Get a Canon 580exII flash.
Set flash on ettl -1, camera at 1250 or 1600 iso, shutter at 250 and lens at 2.8.
Also, get a monopod---no tripod at football game-too bulky.
Also, use focus expanded.

| I don't think so.
Might impact the IQ a little, but it won't hurt the lens one bit. | | | |

1. Try shooting in daylight
| It's pretty hard to do that when the game is being played at night. :-)
I would suggest to nix the tripod idea completely. The sidelines can be a congested place and you surely don't want a law suit on your hands because someone (player, coach, cheerleader, etc.) tripped over the leg and got injured. A monopod is much safer and easy to move around.
Typically with a 580EX II mounted low on the monopod, I shoot at ISO 1000, 1/250 sec on manual. Check the histogram and adjust as necessary to get a decent looking shot. Lately, I have been using the 100-400L at f/4.5 - 5.6 with good results. I admit I noticed some lag time when focusing on a few occasions but it seems my Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 lens has some focusing issues and I have retired it for the moment until I can send it in for calibration.
Hope this helps.
