Whats the best way to go about photographing star trails? One long exposure or more shorter exposures and somehow layered together?

There's a ton of great resources on the web regarding star trails. Do a Google and kill off a bunch of hours reading.

That said, my general rule is that if there is no light on the ground than a long exposure can work well but if there's even a little light on the ground or a building or cityscape then creating a series of exposures and then stacking them can create an attractive image. It's all in your location.

Been doing some reading on it. I'll be camping out at Lake Travis, so there will be ground light kinda close, across the lake. I was leaning towards multiple shots. Reading up on stacking now.

If you are looking for an exposure longer than a few minutes, you will probably need to do some amount of stacking. The longer your exposure, the bigger issue noise is going to become.

I'm just sayin...
