What to do about dark eyeglasses? - 02-25-2010, 10:27 PM

I have a family shoot in a few weeks where the father has those eyeglasses that turn dark when he goes outside. They are wanting the pictures all outdoors at a local lake.

I know I could ask him to take them off for the photos, but I don't think he'd feel comfortable doing that. It's just not the "real" him, if you know what I mean.

Are there any tips for dealing with this besides doing tons of photoshopping afterwards? A few years ago I had a couple renew their vows for their 20th anniversary and wanted pics outdoors on a very sunny day and BOTH of them had glasses that did that. It took me hours and hours to fix that, and I'm trying to prevent that here.

Does he have a clear pair of glasses in addition?

Can you get a cheap pair that looks similar -- maybe from a cheap sunglass store -- and take the lenses out? Maybe he has an old set of frames that you can take the lenses out?

No, don't think he has an extra pair, but I'll ask.

You can take a few shots of him with the glasses off and swap the eyes in Photoshop. I would make sure the camera is on a tripod and at the same distance and focal length. Each time you change something you will need to do a few more of him without the glasses. Also make sure the head position is the same.

Explain the problem to them.
Have him put the glasses in his pocket and only put them on two seconds before you take the picture. take two or three images and have them put the glasses back in their pocket.
Modern lenses transition very quickly, so you have to work quickly.
It's a pain in the a## but that's sometimes better than trying photoshop tricks you aren't comfortable with.

Go at night, and use lots of strobes.

How sensitive are they? Early morning or late evening with a slow sync might do it.

Don, that was my first thought of taking some with and some without his glasses and doing the photoshop thing (which I do know how to do), but I also appreciate Tom's advice. I'll talk to him and see what we can come up with.

Thanks for your help!
