Since Lonnie is being oblong with his knees removed... (Steve Martin, look it up).

For most family session on a crop sensor, I'd suggest starting at ISO 100, f/8, and 1/125 in the studio. Outdoors it's all about how much light you have.

Hey Tammy! I have Nikon D300. For Picture Control (Shooting Menu--Picture Control) I highly recommend using Neutral for people. I also set both Hue and Saturation a grade lower (sometimes two grades lower). But that is only if you are shooting in the JPEG format. For RAW all that doesn't really matter.

As to Aperture/Shutter - those vary greatly. For the beginning try to shoot in Aperture Priority mode, keep ISO low and maybe f/8 to make sure everybody is in focus. But then again it depends on how you position the family and how many people there are...

Anyway I guess the best piece of advice I got once was PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
