Stopping Adobe Bridge from auto correcting - 11-21-2005, 08:31 AM

This was a topic of discussion at Scott's Saturday lighting class and I did a little research on the topic of the auto correcting thumbnails in bridge. From what I gather, you can't stop the auto correcting, but what you can do is open up ACR, uncheck all the auto boxes and flip WB to as shot. Now click the little right arrow head at the top of the tool panel and save as new camera raw default. Next time you open bridge, you can select all thumbnails, and right click, apply camera raw default. Bam! no more auto corrected images. Hope this helps.

If I actually find a better way, I'll post it.

I saw someone else suggest it, but it didn't work for me. Do you know what ctrl+u actually does?

Thanks for posting this! I was wondering this just the other day going through some candlelit shots...wanted the dark, moody look. Apparently, bridge didn't agree with me. It was only on a few shots so I just opened those and brought the exposure back down...but these tips sound great for next time! Thanks guys!

Open your RAW file in Bridge so you can see what it thinks needs adjustment, uncheck what you don't want Bridge to AUTO adjust. Click on the little arrown to the right of the Settings - Camera Raw Defaults menu. This will give you a drop down menu that says Load Settings..., Save Settings.... etc. Click on the "Save New Camera RAW Defaults" line and there you have it. ACR now defaults to what you want or don't want Auto Corrected

If you change the camera defaults, you shouldn't have to do anything to the new images for the thumbnails to use the defaults (ie you shouldn't have to explicitly "apply camera raw defaults" unless the images already had settings previously applied).

There is a trick to setting the defaults that can trip you up though. After you use the "Save New Camera RAW Defaults" command on the flyout menu, you have to click "Done" in the main Camera RAW dialog. If you don't click Done, the defaults will not be saved. Personally I think this is a bug because it doesn't really make sense, but that's the way it works. BTW you can do more than just disabling the Auto checkboxes for you new defaults. If there are certain Brightness/Contrast/Saturation/Calibration/Curve settings that you use on a consistent basis you can make those part of your defaults as well.

This months issue of Shutterbug told how to turn off the automatics in Bridge/Raw (and the thumbs). I'll get my copy in a little bit and post the instructions - the setting's in a weird place.

Here's the tip from the magazine on preventing Auto0adjustment and also allowing the thumbs to appear as they should, not preadjusted.

Select a Raw file (anyone will do) and launch Camera Raw.
At the top of the Dialog at the right is a "Camera Setting" window which, in default mode, reads [Camera Raw Defaults].
To the right of that is an arrow, click on it to open a dialog menu.
About 1/2 way down the menu is "Use Auto Adjustments".
Uncheck this.
Go down and click on "Reset Camera Raw Defaults"

Next time Camera Raw is launched the 4 auto adjust functions will be off, and thumbnails of Camera Raw files in Bridge will be generated without any adjustments (and thus be alot faster)

I'm pretty sure this will reset you back to "factory defaults". The command you want is "Save New Camera RAW Defaults". Just be sure to click "Done" for the change to stick.
