One of the beauties of working with a layer mask is that you work in black and white. When I work with layer masks, I use a soft-edged brush and keep my palette as pure white and pure black. For something like this, I would :
Make #1 the background layer (bag closed)
Make #2 the top layer (bag open showing contents)
Add a layer mask to top layer
fill layer mask with black
# this blocks 100% of the "bag open" layer
Make the brush tool active
Using a "rather large" soft-edged brush and the pure white color, paint around the middle of the bag to let the interior contents show through
# this will take some trial and error
* make sure that you have the mask active and not the actual layer when you're painting the black and white. You can accomplish this by clicking on the mask icon itself in the Layers panel. You can also view the mask layer itself by CTRL-clicking the mask icon in the Layers panel (I think).
