Sizing for output tutorial posted - 11-26-2005, 02:19 AM

Today I was giving some private Photoshop instruction to a local photographer, and part of what she needed to learn was prepping image size for files she wanted to drop off at her lab for output. Since this wasn't the first time I'd had to walk someone through the process, and guessing it wouldn't be the last, I decided to write up a tutorial and post it to a new blog on my site, Chuck Ivy - Photography Notes.

Please give it a read and feel free to give me any feedback. I'm new to writing tutorials, but had been toying around with the idea of writing my own tips blog for both traditional and digital photography, and this seemed like a good excuse to kick-start the effort.

Hey great write up. I followed it pretty well. The only question I have is do you have people asking you for pictures without the white space around the picture? I kind of did something like you showed and gave the pictures to some people and they always asked to take the white space out. I told them that if I did that then I would have to crop out a portion of the picture and they were fine with that.

This is my first time to mess with canvas size, and it was great to follow your instructions and know that I was going in the right direction.

Thanks

Yeah, the thing to keep in mind (and to try to educate the client about) is, they might love a 5x7 print of your image, but if they order an 8x10 of the same image, the framing above and below is going to be different than what they were expecting.

I never knew what Canvas Size was good for. I try to leave room on photos for cropping to 8x10, but this method looks very good for when you can't (or don't want to) do that. Thanks!
