How to photograph iPad? - 06-01-2010, 11:30 AM

I just got a project that requires to take a picture of an iPad standing. How can I make them stand straight up? Also what can I do to eliminate the lighting reflection?

Thanks.

1 Prop it against something
2 Play with the angle of incidence

Thanks for the advice. I forgot to mention that I cannot have anything supporting it on the sides except on the bottom.

like what? if I'm doing a 3/4 view then you will see anything that it is supporting it. I need the iPad to be straight up 90 degrees.

You might just have to photoshop out whatever you use to prop it up, get something the same color as your background, or maybe some clear-ish tupperware (I use these little clear boxes all the time for propping up products). In the end I have to photoshop it out, but the clear boxes don't have a color cast and if done right they aren't too hard to take out in post.

Good luck.

Can you lay it down on white paper and shoot straight down?

you can always use poster gum and a custom cut angled wood block. Cut the wood block to support the ipad at the angle that you want, and then put several of the poster gum dots all over it.

as far as the reflection is concerned -- you can use a black velvet cloth to shoot through, and then do so at such an angle that keeps your lens just off of the glass of the ipad. It will be the lighting in this case that is the tricky part. Large diffuse and reflected in from 60 on both sides and up high will give you your best shot at streak free.

As was mentioned earlier -- photoshop will give you your best opportunity to avoid the problem areas. I am not saying do just do a crappy job and fix in photoshop, but you get to the point of doing more an more to avoid problems, when it can be easily fixed post, then I say fix in post.

What sort of project is this? A school project? Any other requirements would be helpful

I agree with shooting it laying down on a white sheet. Then if you want the shadow, just add it in post later.

I've done something similar to this before. Take two shots from a tripod and make sure you don't move the tripod + camera. The first shot is of the subject with whatever prop is holding it up from one side. The second shot is of the subject being propped up from the other side. Then, in Photoshop you would merge the two shots so that you use the "uncluttered" half of each shot. Special care must be take to make sure that the subject-to-camera orientation is unchanged.
