Excellent article, Sonny!
Some stuff I have used for close-up photographs: The Macro setting on my lenses...none of which are
real macro lenses, but they will do more than you think!
Close-up lenses...the two-element ones as sold by Nikon and Canon. Canons are more expen$ive!

They are better corrected than the single element close up lenses that are so common, but, they all will do a good job, imo.
They may not be the exact size, but step up/step down rings/adapters can make a good fit. I can actually use my 62mm Nikon 6T on my 67mm 70-300 lens without vignetting, not that I will. HEAVY! I have other, lighter lenses for getting close, but none are true macro lenses.
The center will be the sharpest with all supplementary lenses, but, you can crop.
Lighting: The little 2-light things you see on the CSI cameras are marvelous, but vewwy, vewwy expen$ive.
What I have tried, and it works just fine (thank you,iTTL) is to put a bounce card on my shoe mounted SB 600, angle it forward about 1-2 clicks from vertical, which throws the light closer to the front of your lens, and the thing you are photoing, and shoot away!
Some fine tuning may be necessary, but it works for my modest needs.
