Photojournalism question - 03-04-2005, 03:28 PM

I took some pictures of a parade in town and submitted them to two local newspapers (they are both very small publications.). They liked the pictures and want me to shoot more for them, however they don't pay for free-lance photos. Instead they have offered to give me a byline. I'm still an amatuer but someday I would like to make a little money from my photos. Is this a good way to get experience or am i being taken advantage of? I have had bad luck in my fulltime profession(law enforcement) when it came to working for free. Any comments/suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Chris911

you have an excellent opportunity. i would do it until you have enough published works to get a nice portfolio together.

good luck.

I'd also ask for Press Credentials from them.

Those can get you into gigs that do pay.

Maybe also negotiate a free subscription.

it's good that you want to be cautious, but as Obi said, get a press pass and you can open some of your own doors, good luck

I agree with others it's fine to do some freebie work if it will get you experience, build a portfolio, and maybe get some press credentials. Besides, as long as they aren't expecting exclusive rights to any of the photos you take you can always shop them to other outlets. And if they do want exclusive rights, they should be willing to pay for that.
