Sizing Photo's - 12-06-2005, 01:21 PM

This may be an age old question / problem, but I'm running into a problem where a few of my customers are concerned that my 5x7
's, 4x6's, 8x10's, etc., aren't fitting into their frames. I usually crop the photo to the dimensions that they order, however, it seems that there may need to be a blank (white) border around the photo's ... when resizing a photo in photoshop, do you automatically add a border ? I know when I print an 11x14, that a 16x20 matte works perfectly for what I'm doing...

Any thoughts appreciated.

I print exactly what they order. If it is an offsize, my lab allows me to size it up with a white matt to the next standard size and then they will trim it for me, but I don's see how you could ever guess exactly how your print is going to fit in a frame. As long as your printer is printing accurate sizes, order what they ask for.

I agree, I've explained that if I print an 8x10, it will be 8" x 10" ... if they want to allow for frame size, then the image is going to be less, ie: 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 or conversely, if they want the image to be 8x10 then the paper size may be 8-1/4 x 10-1/4 (if they want a border) ... I hope I'm understanding this right. Just wasn't sure if there was some standard thing I might be overlooking or didn't know about.

Thanks.

Most frames/mattes are designed to have a bit of overlap, 1/8" - 1/4" is fairly typical. But I don't know that you can necessarily use a standard size border and have it work every time, because it really depends on the frame/matte they're using. You definitely woudn't want the white border to show because the image was too small. Best thing to do is just try to frame/crop so that nothing important is right up against the edge of the print so that even when the edges get covered you're not losing anything.
