Metal/Hardcore Band Live Shots - 09-18-2010, 07:37 PM

I've recently been attempting to take live shots for various bands.
I'm an amateur, but I've purchased books to help me on shutter speed, iso, etc.
I'm looking for more of this type of look for a live shot, but I can never seem to get it.

I'm just looking for advice on how to get this effect.
I shoot with a Sony a230.
If you can help, please do.

I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place.*

It looks like he is exposing for ambient light and then using a flash.

It's a bit longer exposure using a flash and a rear curtain sync, not hard to do but really not that many people go for the shot unless it is a posed shot and you know how to make the best of the players movements-try doing this with a drummer.
