Raw converters - 12-15-2005, 10:30 AM

What raw converters are you all using. I like RawShooter, but it tries to auto adjust everything it makes a lot of things darker, but when I use bridge it does not, but some dark scense I have tiny red dots over everything.

I use Adobe Camera RAW with CS2/Bridge. As for the tiny red dots, do you have the "'Highlights" button checked at the top of the window? If so then they are warning you that those pixels are blown (255,255,255) and you should either accept that or drop the exposure. Another way of seeing this info is to hold down the "Alt" key while you click on the exposure slider. The entire screen will turn black except for those pixels that have one or more color channels blown. You can do the same thing with the "shadows" sliders except the screen turns white except for those pixels that have a 0 in one or more color channels.

Canon DPP about 75% of the time and Adobe Camera Raw about 25% of the time. I got used to using DPP before I had Photoshop, so it just feels more familiar.

Maybe a new Canon 1D series in the future?

I've been using BreezeBrowser .. it essentially just uses the Canon libraries, but seems to do a better job. I tried CaptureOne and didn't like it.. found it to be difficult to use (defined as anything that makes me read a manual).

It does have its limitations.. all it can do is the basics in coversion (no histogram adjustments, for instance)... and its conversion is single threaded... but I think "Mickey Mouse" is unfair.

(Besides, I actually bought it for its other abilities.. IPTC information editing, HTML generation, and the like... the converter was a bonus.)

I started with DPP then got CS so I used that. I've now moved back to DPP because the colors are better and the files take less work to look like they should.

I use COne the most, Unlike Brad, I found COne the easiest to use, but RawShooter is good too, as is CS2. For me, I find Bibble to be the hardest to use.

Adobe Camera Raw. Tried a few others including Nikon Capture and I keep coming back to ACR, except when I need to reduce a camera specific artifact, like moire on my D70. For that Nikon Capture 4 has no equal.

I used to use Bibble whenever I needed speed and batching ease, and Nikon Capture for detail work. Now I used bridge and ACR. Nikon is going to have to wow me with version 5 of Nikon Capture to get me to change my current workflow.

I use C1 for just about everthing...

Every once in a while, I will run a pic through CS just for grins.

But, 99.9% of mine is C1... It is easy to use, the LE version is a bargain for what you get, and the converted files are the best! IMAO...
