What items/ props would you bring? - 12-07-2010, 08:36 PM

I just wanted everyone's opinion on what are the best items to bring to an outdoor shoot...I mean anything you use including equipment, stuff you just bring..etc.
Anything that is helpful, useful, and so forth.

I know things can vary depending on what kind of shoot.

ALSO-- For toddlers and children, how do you try to keep them still? Is a rattle or toy useful?
I try to take photos of my little ones and the are all over the place!

Just any advice you can give about anything on this subject will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks ALL,

Erica

I know I always bring an external flash, light stand, umbrella, 48"reflector, extra mem cards, The only prop I have ever used was a fully restored, silver 66 vette. but I do see people bring couches, chairs, umbrellas, big lights, battery packs, etc..etc...

Just my camera, couple lenses and extra memory cards. Still working on acquiring more props and equipment but I want to learn how to use what's available and bring minimal with me.

The sheet is a good idea, could have came in handy at my last session to diffuse the midday sun! grrr.

For younger babies, a squeaky toy or rattle, something to get their attention. For toddlers it's trickier but what I've learned with my son (since he HATES taking pictures) is to give him a couple toys and let him play, play with him, then slowly fade out and start taking pictures. Here's a link to my FB album of his shots recently: Ryan | 2 Years | Facebook As you can see, he never looks at the camera, ever. I usually say "where's daddy?" and he'll look at me and that's when I'll try and get the pic, but he usually looks away before I get it, lol!

Bring extra memory cards and batteries if you got them.

Na, little car, we can fit most of this in 3 backpacks, then we carry the light stands...easy breezy....every shoot calls for different stuff

Main camera and lenses, backup body, Speedline 580 EXii. Don't do OCF yet (hopefully next year!) so no other lighting equipment except some large foam core boards (1 black, 1 light) to use as modifiers. I also carry a sheet if I'm shooting in the middle of the day. Extra CF cards and batteries.

For toddlers/young children, I'll also bring:
A few toys I don't mind being in the final images (blocks, fun-looking jack-in-the-box, etc.)
A bottle of bubbles.
Smarties for bribery. :)
Sometimes I'll bring a large lollipop, you know, the big multi-colored ones.
Unfinished wooden chair
Galvanized tub
Blankets
Water bottles for clients
Kid-sized bench (found at an antique store for $20 - so cute!
Model release, contract and pen
A wagon to haul all the crap

There's probably more but that's all I can think of now...

LOL, I guess I was thinking of mine because I have 2 big car seats in the back so it's going to be a tricky one now since I bought 2 light stands!

Thanks that helped a lot! I did a shoot today for my niece and nephew (he's the baby)...and found a very loud rattle that helped out tremendously!
UGH! I forgot bubbles though :(
