lens micro adjust - 02-28-2011, 08:50 PM

I know most here already know this but if you don't check it out. I have been struggling with my 70-200 2.8 and found I had to adjust it by (+12) on my 7D. I can't believe the difference. I thought it was camera shake, but it was just plain out of focus.

here is a video that kinda explains what I'm trying to say:
YouTube - Datacolor SpyderLensCal - Autofocus calibration

I shot a common ruler next to a AA battery box. The Canon 7D has a built in micro adjustment in the settings menu. I had no idea you could adjust the camera for every lens.

I guess it's true ... you don't know ... what you don't know.

Yep, one of the features of my 50D I love. Canon should put that feature in all the cameras

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I had no idea that I could adjust this myself. Im a little confused as to how they did the "measurement"

How did you set up your homemade rig? Do you focus on the item you placed next to the ruler? I assume there is a specific angle the ruler should be?

I have a 7d on the way...does it store the calibration for every lens or you adjust it each time you switch lenses? I'll bet that's the problem I'm having with one of my lenses! Thanks for posting this!

Yes it stores the data ... only have to do it once per lens.

Out of the 4 lens I have I had to adjust 3 ... the 100 2.8 macro was right on ... the 70-200 2.8 was the worst at +12

I ordered the Lens Align Lite. and use that on the shorter focal lenghts. The same can be done with a ruler tho. But for longer lens you need the extra long ruler, which I didnt buy so on my 500mm i use 5 white bowels in the yard. Focused on the middle and adjusted from there. +3 to get it right on.

That's funny ... I just got this picture of you walking out of the house with five white bowels and your wife just shaking her head

Hmm, I'm thinking that I need to do this. As if it weren't hard enough to focus, my Nikon 85 f/1.4 is off somehow - I can't get a clear focus.
