I'm kind of hesitant to even call it a project. OK, deep breath... My mom died of cancer just over 8 years ago, I still think of her every day... I've been wanting to document the struggles of cancer patients going thru this battle for some time now, but I've been too scared to do it.. but I think the time has come. If this was something that you were to undertake, how or where would you start?

The Susan G. Komen 3 day cancer walk might be a great place to document/photograph the struggles/accomplishments of cancer patients and survivors.

You could try getting in touch with a Hospice organization.

They may ignore you or they might help you find the right person.

thanks, but it's not really what I am after. I am more interested in the daily struggles of a cancer patient while they are in the hospital, during chemo, fighting the battle, not documenting a race.

Hospice is a thought, but at that point the battle is lost... I would like to document the battle more from the beginning thru the end as opposed to just the end. They might be able to help me find a starting point though. Thanks.

Dan, try the Austin Cancer Connection. My girl scouts make no sew fleece blankets for them to give to patients as they start Chemo. Cancer Connection

You also might try contacting the Armstrong foundation in town.

Sounds like a great project.

You need a cancer patient who wants to tell their story. I think once you find someone who wants to tell their story, you direction will be come more clear. The two of you will work together, to build the story. Tell your story, and why you want to do this. Make a blog just for this story. Twit about it, talk about it on facebook.

yes, exactly... what do you think is the best way to find someone who wants to share their story, good or bad. It's not something you place an ad in craigs list... is it???

Joe, Susan, thanks for the input.

No not Craigslist!:)

My thoughts were to set up a blog. Then share your story about your mother and tell about your idea and allow input from others. Think about what John Stovall did with his wife. Tweet about it and share the idea on facebook, always linking to your blog. You never know who will read it and want to join. The idea also if you set it up now and then find someone they will see that you are serious about this. You could let local organizations that deal with cancer know what you want to do. They might even include it in their newsletter etc. You will find someone, it may just take a little time.

I had my thoughts all figured out for you until I realized you were in austin. I know 2 people dealing with cancer right now (one I am having a fundraiser for saturday) and I would have gladly set you up with them if I could. You would manage both ends of the spectrum with them, one is strong and does his best to not let it phase him, and the other, weak and doesnt know how he will continue.

Good luck and sorry for your loss. I just lost an uncle to cancer a few weeks ago, which he got from crazy nuclear testing in the deserts of Nevada.

The other thing you might do is to find a doctor who deals with cancer in your area. See if you could speak to them...you would have to find the right doctor of course...and ask them to hand out your cards to a few of their patients they think might be interested. The doctor could also use the photos in some of his adverstising...
