_MG_1234 - file naming problem? - 12-29-2005, 08:57 PM

Well, I'm stumped on this one.

I downloaded a card of basketball photos tonight that I took with my 20D, and all of the filenames start with _MG instead of IMG. I tried formatting the card, resetting the file number, and resetting the camera settings, but nothing seems to be curing the problem.

Anyone else run into this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a related note, does anyone here use the Adobe RGB space on their camera? From everything I read, it's the "professional's choice" for it's wider colorspace. Any truth to it when it comes to practical usage?

my Camera setting is Adobe RGB and convert to sRGB at RAW for web, stays the same format for print when PP. NOthing to worry about having color space setting on the body, you can convert for PP later.

I use teh Abobe RGB color space becasue all of the magazines I work for want it that way. HERE is a website that explains the difference in Adobe and sRGB color spaces. To paraphrase, "larger color spaces such as Adobe RGB contain both more colors and more highly saturated colors than smaller spaces like sRGB."

I'm not saying that Adobe RGB is bad, but larger color gamuts come at a price. You don't have as smooth a transition between colors because your 16 bit values have to cover a larger range of colors so the steps in between colors are larger. In general you should edit in as narrow a colorspace as possible but it's better to use a larger gamut and not clip colors than it is to use a smaller one if your picture contains those colors.
