Question Vegas tips? - 04-08-2011, 03:04 PM

I'm going to Vegas tomorrow for the first time. I'll be there through Tuesday. What are your (photographic) tips and suggestions for the area?

Thanks!

My fav shots from Vegas were at night along the strip. Just grab your camera and start walking. The fountain at NY NY is pretty cool with the fireboat. The statues in front of the Monte Carlo were coo, too, I thought. I didn't see anything during the day I really wanted to shoot, but the same stuff at night was amazing.

Lens choices? Worried about crime?

I wouldn't worry about crime if you stay on the beaten path.

If you have a chance, tour the neon sign museum, aka "the boneyard". There is really just soooooo much to see in vegas!

When I go with a "real" camera i usually take an 18-200 and then a fast lens (30mm or 50mm 1.4).

As stated above, very few worries about crime staying on the strip. There was another photographer with me, but we were both pretty engrossed in taking pictures. No one bothered us.
With a tripod and if the fountain is on, the Bellagio show might yield some interesting shots. As far as lenses, I would probably take something more general in scope. 28-75 or 24-105, maybe.

2.8 something or faster, the last time I went my best shots were at night. There is a lot of cool street people that will do a lot for 5 bucks. Stay in high traffic end of the strip -or- go downtown. Downtown and the Strip are two different worlds.

Just having fun with my 7D & 5D mark II :-)

I recently shot some neon signs, in old downtown Vegas. Someone suggested that I shoot before a little before nightfall, so as to get some ambient light in the shots. It turns out, that it was good advice!
The "Strip", in my opinion, has been way overdone. Go downtown, get some old time Vegas, or try the Boneyard, as, Kasey suggested, to, again, to get some old Vegas shots. Much more interesting.

just like everyone else, vegas comes alive at night....

I had LOTS of fun when I wandered out at night with a few bucks and my flash, the street performers were willing to have some fun.

And yeah, the stip is over done, but its a fun challenge to change it up a bit.

Ill be in Vegas in a couple weeks.

I kinda hesitate to throw this link out there as I'm sure others have much better images, but here are some of my shots from Vegas.
Would love to see shots that anyone else wants to show in this thread.

Tom,

It was a lot of fun. I would definitely do a lot differently the next time I go though. As for lenses, I used the 14-24mm 100% of the time. I couldn't find a reason to ever change lenses.

Inside Caesar's Palace... those are spiral escalators!

Inside the Venetian:

Inside the Mirage:

Here's a link to the rest of the photos... keep in mind that some of these photos were taken for other people... so there are some random candids in there:

I know its too typical, but Vegas holds a special place in my heart because we honeymooned there. I love it!! I'll be going back there for the BlackboardWorld Conference in July! Can't wait.

NICE PICS.
