Question Need some tips on taking Senior Pictures - 04-27-2011, 08:58 AM

Sooooooo...... I hate doing this, but a good friend of mine has begged of my services to take some Senior Pictures of his daughter...

I'm quite confident in my lighting, posing, and technical skills, but haven't done too much outdoor on location work.

First of all,
What is the goal of a Senior session? I'm trying to understand what I should strive to capture... What I should tell her about what to expect...

Second,
She basically said "I like nature and train tracks and architecture"
Would anyone be willing to clue me in on some primo spots in the DFW area to shoot?

I feel like if I can get the locations nailed down, I can help her with wardrobe selection, and then the actually taking of the pictures will be the easy part....

Does she have an hobbies? Did she do anything special in her high school years (theater/choir/band/ag/etc)? Does she plan to go to college? If so, what is she planning on majoring in? Incorporate those kind of props in her session.

Fort Worth Stockyards & art district sounds like it would be a great place to take her.

Stockyards is a good locale, as is downtown Fort Worth around Sundance Square. The Stockyards also has train tracks that are legal to shoot on (according to Stockyards Management) as long as a train isn't occupying the tracks, which it usually isn't. Mornings are best for the Stockyards unless you like crowds of "happy" people in your senior shots.

Downtown Grapevine has some easily accessible tracks. From a shoot (with Leslie Spurlock) on Saturday. Sorry for the softness, but you get an idea of the tracks:

HAHAHAHA!

nature: Dallas Aboretum or really any park. Off of 75 and Campbell there's a bunch of business buildings and a business park behind it so you could know out the architecture portion too. Depends on what part of town you plan on traveling to.

train tracks?! haha...ya got me.

as far as what to expect...do some research on senior portraits...image search and see what you like try to re-create or branch off and do your own thing. I think most of all just have fun, and capture those moments.

i have a few seniors on my website check them out.
