I use these:

Hyperfocal Distance and Depth of Field Calculator - DOFMaster

You can make your own cool DOF wheel and do hyperfocal charts, print them and keep em handy.

You can put multiple focal lengths on the DOF wheels, so I did a couple with different primes paired up. I did Hyperfocal charts for all my zooms.

Stupid question, when would you need to calculate DOF for a shot?
I know what DOF is, and understand somewhat how it is calculated, but I don't understand a practical application of when it would be used.

Lets say your taking a picture of your kids and standing right behind them is some naked senator, you want all of your kids to be in focus but not the senator. In this case if you knew exactly how big you DOF was you could insure that the senator would not be in focus.

or lets say you were in a studio and need to shoot wide open and wanted the whole subject in focus but not the back ground. If you knew the distance you needed to be away from the subject to aquire the correct DOF, that might be handy.

In the first case you controlled the DOF by varying the f stop value at a fix distance, in the second case you controlled the DOF by varying the distance from the subject with a fix f stop. In either case you need to know the exact distance of the DOF...
