Red Eye for D50 - 01-02-2006, 10:13 AM

I am having major problems with Red Eye on my D50. Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this problem? The camera has a setting for the red eye, and I am using it. However, it is still happening! Someone had mentioned to my husband that it was because the flash was too close to the lens and that I needed to buy a flash. Is there another way to fix it? I plan to buy a flash in the future, but was planning on learning the camera first. I took some pictures at the New Years Eve party and while I know everyone in the pictures were drunk, I don't remember any eyes glowing!!

The only way to really stop it is to use an esternal flash unit that is elevated several inches away from the plane of the lens so that the flash (light) won't be directed straight into the pupil of the eye that the camera is seeing into. The Red is actually blood vessels inside of the eye that the flash illuminates. The built in flash will inevitably cause the red eye. What the red eye feature on the camera does is trick the pupil into closing more so that less of the light enters.

What should I look for in an external flash? I obviously am clueless what to start looking for. I have found a few different flashes that go with the D50, but what is the difference?

Of course you can always easily edit out the red eye in photoshop or other photo editing tools. That's what I do. Getting a flash that mounts to your camera (like the SB-800) won't eliminate the red eye, it will just reduce it. Like I said you can easily edit it out so I don't worry about it.
