Book Recommendation: Understanding Exposure - 04-24-2007, 07:15 PM

Lisa and I were at a local book store and I came across this book and I thought I would share.

Level: Beginner

It seemed to be a great book for the starting photog because it really gave some good explainations on how to understand exposure. it even had a ton of side by side photos of the same subject shot using varying settings. Each photo listed the camera settings used such as shutter speed and aperture. this really helps you understand what different settings do in different situations and how it affects your depth of field etc.

Understanding Exposure
by Bryan Peterson

Book on Amazon.com Here for $14.47

This is one I definitely recommend...

Bryan Peterson's books are great. I was on a tour with him about 12 years ago and I learne more about composition from him than anyone else. The Exposure book is great - I read through it recently. I own the prior version.

You can't go wrong with Peterson. Books are a wealth of information and they're relatively cheap.

I also highly recommend The Big Picture:The Professional Photographer's Guide to Rights, Rates & Negotiation. This book literally saved from giving away some of my most prized photographs to a stock agency. It also provides a great guide on professional business practice regarding studio, portrait and wedding work as well as commercial photography. you can find it on amazon here.

I have Peterson's book, however I find myself referencing Learning to Light by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz more often. It shows lighting setups, and covers commercial photography in greater depth.

as seen on strobist: Light: Science and Magic by Fil Hunter and others. Possibly one of the greatest pieces of non-fiction related to photography. I just got mine in the mail.
