im bringing my 300d and i wanted to pack light.

i have :
17-40 f4L
50mm 1.8
70-200 f4L

do you think i will use the 70-200 enough to make it worthwhile?
I was thinking about just bringing the 17-40 and the 50mm 1.8
any ideas?
I want to take city shots.

I would take it all - if you can cart it. It also depends on what you plan on shooting. The 17-40 may be your walkaround, but if you're shooting street scenes, that 70-200 will come in handy as you can stand in one corner and shoot away yet still get "intimate".

Part of the beauty of shooting in Asia is capturing people as they walk around and observe their environment. The 17-40 may not give you the reach you want/need for that.

On my last trip, I mostly used my 28-135, used my 50 f/1.8 a couple of times, and my 75-300 a few times - but then again the 28-135 has a lot more reach than the 17-40. I no longer own any of those lenses (OK, I still have a 50, but it's the f/1.4 version) so on my next trip, I will likely carry ALL my stuff again.

If you have an external flash, don't forget to take that also!

Wow, a trip to Japan sounds awesome!

You also need to think about how you're going to store all those great photos you take.

I took a laptop and a GigaVu on my last trip. On the van/bus, I was transferring all my shots to the GigaVu storage device and then every evening, I transferred everything to my laptop hard drive.

I was worried that just having one backup would be risky. I have had the hard drive in my laptop crash.

Another way to go would be to burn to DVD's but the laptop I used didn't have a DVD burner - just a CD burner which just wouldn't cut it. Between my husband and I, we ended up with over 4400 photos (RAW) in 10 days in Ireland.

Good luck and have fun,
Patti
