Workshops. - 07-15-2007, 01:13 PM

I've noticed a couple of summer workshops that'd I'd like to go, but am still not sure about. I just wonder if it's worth the money. Has anyone here every attended one? If so please let me know how you liked it.

I've been to a couple, but during other times of the year. I've enjoyed them. Try it out if you can, then you know.

What kind are you talking about? The $1-2k+ or the -$100?

I've tried both and plan on some again.

Really depends on the speaker and the material covered etc... Which ones are you interested in? Are they the ones listed here on CPF or others that are not. If they are not listed here, feel free to send them to me and Ill get them online for everyone to see..

I was interested in a few wedding workshops like that one posted here in Santa Cruz. What workshops should I keep an eye out for? or what names should I look for?

Jerome, how serious are you about being a professional photographer? Look up Professional Photographers of Sacramento Valley. There is a wealth of information you can get, plus you will learn the proper way to become a Pro Photog. There are about 120 members in that group with a good mix of newbies and grand masters (I believe Ted Sirlin was still showing up from time to time). You will then have all sorts of workshops available through the PPA, PPC (California) and the various other locals in the state (there are 20 State affiliated professional photography associations, I'm part of the Northern California Group)

I've done a few workshops...in true girl fashion, I've always attended with like-minded friends so if the workshop is not up to our expectations we are still guarenteed a nice lunch out and maybe some shooting afterwards.
Also since different people pick up on different things, it is good to have extra ears along to rehash the information later.

The best portrait one I went to was with the late Monte Zucker, which not only focused on lighting and posing subjects but also post processing to make the images read better.

Even though the thread is a little cool, I'll add my two cents worth...

Most of the pro workshops are run well and you will learn a lot... but (and its a big 'but'), I think between the industry workshops ($99 - $149) run by Sony, Nikon, and such, AND your friends... you can save a lot of money and have more fun.

I think most of the fun is in the continuous learning, and trying stuff out, and just poking around the edges of things you are interested in. Workshops inspire and show you the "art of the possible", but I don't think they can substitute for a good social network of camera buffs.

Like I said, my two cents worth...

See ya on the trail,
DaveR
