A Comparison of a HDR and a Single RAW Picture. - 08-09-2007, 02:59 PM

Up here in the mountains I belong to the Yosemite Western Artists - Photo Group, and one of the members and I were discussing HDR and if the increased latitude one gained was worth the extra shooting and post processing time. I said for jewelry and 3-D fine art photography I thought it was. So I went home and shot one my wife's pieces. I did 9 exposures from -4 to +4, my normal range, and produced my HDR from these. I took one of the Raw shots and used this as my one shot example. I used a Canon 20D with a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro lens at f22. I then emailed him the following images to show him what I was talking about.

Single Raw:

Depth of Field, I am shooting at just over 5 in. in macro mode, things get shallow fast at these distances. I have seen a difference between f16 and f22, but not that much between f22 and f32, so I stay with f22.
