Question for those that say their lens is not sharp... - 08-18-2007, 09:32 PM

What settings did you have your camera set to, and what were the conditions of the environment?

ISO? F-stop? Shutter speed? Daylight, dawn, dusk or nighttime etc? What led you to conclude that the lens you have is not sharp. Also what testing did you do with your lens? Did you only use a focus chart or tried different ISO’s and camera settings?

I am asking, because I used to think my lens was not sharp when I first bought it. I have gone over 1000's of images these past few days, which is what I do every few months to evaluate my images and technique. I was isolating images which I used shutter speeds in the range of 125-500 with an f-stop of 2.8 using my 1DMark II and the 70-200mm F2.8L IS lens. Every image that I have taken at ISO 400, 500 & 640 is razor sharp and gets noisier at I go higher in ISO. Everything below ISO 400 gets fuzzy/blurry the further down. I have never noticed this before until I did the isolations.

BTW, what prompted me to do isolations is that I was looking at ways of increasing the quality of my images. I was looking for things that work for me and things that don’t, as well as why.

You'd be surprised at how much camera blur you get even at faster shutters. Try this as well: Put your camera on a tripod, and if your camera can do this, lock your mirror up. You'll be surprised at the difference in sharpness of your images.

You know something, I've actually never shot a single image with my DSLR using MLU, but I have done that with my ELAN's using T-max. I did pull some more images that I took with the 20D & 30D using the same lens and settings and so far at lower ISO's they look sharper, but... those was using the 70-200 F4 lens, not the 70-200 F2.8L IS lens, so I don't think my findings is valid. I will take my camera out with a tripod and focus on some flowers or something. I will also try MLU since that is something I've yet to do on this 1DMII or even with the 20D & 30D camera's I had. Thanks for the suggestion.
