balconies or another form of cover is always nice.

we typically see people setting up on a tripod and then using long exposures.. like 4-6 secs etc but using a low ISO and a small aperture. its pretty much hit or miss. a cable release is nice to have as well... that way you dont have to keep touching the camera to get it to fire

just keep shooting... shot after shot etc.

Ahhh, so just shutter speed is all I have to worry about..

If you are shooting at night set your camera to bulb, and with your cable release trigger the shutter. Keep it open till the lightning strikes then close the shutter. In effect, the lightning takes its own picture, while you wait with the shutter open.
