Since you are missing most of the data in the highlight area, you'll still be blown out through the fountain and the cheeks but you can improve it. I kind of like the etherial quality of it. Did you try it in black and white?

If you have Photoshop you can make a duplicate layer and set the blend mode to "linear burn", which will increase the "black" content of all the pixels in the midrange to highlights.
But remember, since there is essentially no info in the highlights to add to, there will be no change in the areas that are the brightest white.
That will give you more saturation through the midtones with out blocking up the shadows. If you copy your duplicate layer with the blend mode set, you can add more depth. Or change the blend mode in the next copy of the layer to "multiply" but that will add "black" to all the pixels. (Anyone with the proper technical words for that can chime right in )

Personally, I'd do a filter of watercolor or some other artsy thing on it use the blown out areas to your advantage to add something out of the ordinary.

I think the best thing to do is turn it into a B&W photo. Below is a quick version as a B&W.

Nice work. It is actually better to turn it to B&W than try fix if manually in Photoshop.
You can also send it to http://www.innovatronix.com/photoretouch.asp
They retouch images for only $2.50 per image.

I tried making it dramatic, there is a lot of washed out data.....but I think it came out a little too dreamy...
