Cygnus Shuts Two Photo Magazines

More Info:
http://www.pdnpulse.com/2009/03/cygn...magazines.html

March 31, 2009

Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business publisher, is suspending publication of two photography magazines, Studio Photography and Photo Trade News (PTN), as well as their joint web site Imaginginfo.com.

Studio Photography was a magazine for professional photographers with a focus on studio owners. PTN dealt with gear and was aimed at retailers and labs. Editorial offices for both magazines were in Melville, N.Y. Diane Berkenfeld is listed as the editor of both titles.

We asked a Cygnus company spokeperson why the magazines were shutting down, and she told us it's because of changes in the photography marketplace. The industry is shifting away from a business-to-business segment and more toward business-to-consumer, spokesperson Kathy Scott said in an e-mail.

The closures were first reported by Folio:, which also said Cygnus would cut 30 jobs company-wide, fewer than ten of which were conneced to the photo titles.

Its only going to get worse. People wanted "CHANGE" and thats what they will get. They will be left with only change in there pockets. Its sad to see this great country crumble right before us. The GREAT AMERICAN DAYS are behind us now :(

whoa nelly... easy on the politically charged replies... hehe.

There's a reason "No Political Discussions" is Rule #1 on CPF! This is one of the two topics that are the most polarizing which can really stir up some major drama on CPF that is not needed.

i know... it was just like a week ago a friend of mine signed up for it. doh!

oh well... rangefinder and after capture will still do fine.

studio photography was good but always seemed on the thin side so im not too surprised that theyre the one to shut down. Even though it was FREE im sure advertisers were/are cutting back and decided that was one of the free magazines they could drop...

i feel for all of the employees that are losing their jobs more than me missing one magazine other in my mailbox.. ugh.

My favorite mags are based in the UK and i dont see no slowdown with them!

Funny you should mention that.

My favorites are from the UK too.
It's just so darn expensive for them. I don't buy them all the time.
The subscription rates aren't to easy on the wallet either.

I understand. It was not really meant to be against Obama. I am the first to admit its not "his fault" or anyONES for that matter. Just the changes in time. Its bound to happen. I see it as once we hit rock bottom we can only go UP from there

i used to get that magazine... Studio Photography....

it did seem like it had 2x more ads than actual content and for a magazine as thin as it was... thats not a good thing. ugh.

now i like rangefinder.. i hope that one never goes away!

I subscribe to Outdoor Photographer since I do a lot of nature shooting. I buy Shutterbug whenever it looks interesting, and also a UK publication Digital Photographer.
