I just got a new HD for storing my digital images. So far I've dumped all my raw images in thier own directory.

What do you think is the best way to store your images? What directory structure and file naming convention seems to work for you? And, what software do you use to catalog images - search and find using EXIF, keywords, etc.?

I store my images with the event name and use Adobe Bridge to help me keep the exif info organized. I use both HD and DVD but need to do a better job of backing up consistently

I store my images in the following manor for directory structure

Image library 2006
2006_01_14
IMG_5496.JPG

if there is an event I make a sub directory with the name of the event under the "Day" subdirectory. then when I edit the photos I usually add the event in the name of the image

IMG_5496_Gal06_01_14.JPG

this gives me the original file name, Gal06 = Galveston 2006, 01 = January , 14= the 14th day.

this way when I need the original image its a lot easier to find it, well for me anyway.

I have been happy with the way I name them and save them. It works for me.

James

I do something similar to James but not the same. I have a main photo directory. Under that I have folders - 2004_10 for October 2004. I have a folder per month. Under these folders I have folders for each event - 20041031_JillsFirstHalloween. Under that folder I have a 100EOS1D folder that contains my RAW files and I put the processed files under the date/event folder. In other words

What kind of images are you shooting? Mine are more subject oriented than event oriented so I may have a diectory tree like this:

Agriculture
-Crops
-Wheat
-Detail
-Field
-Harvest
-Planting
-graves-00012334

Mine are similar to Russells, I have them by animal types and dates, so if I need to locate a photo of a chimp I have a folder just of Apes & Chimps for 2006.

I'm doing pretty much the same as James, except within the day I use a directory named as the event or events that day.

like yesterday went under

2006
01-15-06
Kite festival
*.crw
Dog park
*.crw
