Maternity?

I've been suckered into doing maternity photos. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? It's going to be outside at a park (odd choice for this, I know). For anyone that's done maternity pictures, what are some faux pas with this type of work I should avoid?

I've never done maternity but the first thing I think you should ask is how comfortable she is with showing her bare belly, especially outdoors. Some women are cool with it, others aren't. If you go to Jessica Claire's website (she's a big time wedding photog), she had maternity ones taken of herself recently and very tastefully done. They are under the blog tab. Might give you some ideas!

Chris, I hope you realize that many women have the photographer who does the maternity shots also have them do the birth. Hope you are up for it :)

Hm, I've known a fair number of women who have wanted maternity photos who would never want their birth photographed.

My suggestions would be to try looking at previous work. It's actually not that odd to do maternity shots outside, so there are probably lots of ideas for you to look at.

Met a Pixtus member last week, and she does amazing maternity and baby shoots. Here's her website, and her blog has lots of photos. Sonrisa Photography, photographing Katy, Houston and the surrounding areas

You can also just use google images to look for maternity shots. Only do what the woman is comfortable with. If she is ok with showing her stomach, a button up shirt can be nice because she can unbutton it to the top of the belly. It can blow in the wind as opposed to a shirt being bunched up over her stomach.

I took them. It ended up being her and her son, and there were no 'bare' shots. It was more of a regular portrait type thing, just that she had a huge belly.

Here's what I got out of it. I can count a million things to fix, and I did get some critique on these already, but feel free with any more. I'm not a professional by any stretch, so go easy.

Oh, and I wouldn't do pictures of a birth. I saw three of my own, and several more when I was into the paramedicine thing.

I did. I told her if she said she wanted to make a heart over her stomach with her hands, I would vomit and never speak to her again.

Should have gotten one with her son sticking out his stomach to see if it was a big as mom's Love these; they aren't the "typical" maternity shots, but in no way lacking because of it. Hopefully she didn't really want the heart over her stomach shot!
