Printing Question - 03-13-2005, 05:47 PM

I have a .jpg image that is 1110x1700 pixels at 200 ppi. How large of a print can I have printed and maintain photographic quality? This will be a gift for my future inlaws, and I really want it to come out nice. 11x14 would be great, but quality is more important than size at this point.

Thanks for you help!

Hmm...I would probably not go over an 8x10 - with the 1.8 mp you may be pushing it a bit...a 5x7 should come out fine... if you have a good interpolation program like Genuine Fractals or Fred Miranda's Step Interpolation you might get by with a good 8x10....doing the resizing in small, incremental steps.

:( Bummer.

So I guess this begs a follow up question.

I have this image in color 35mm 400 speed film as well. I wanted to greyscale it, and do some minor touch ups of skin blemishes. Can I take that film negative and have a higher quality scan made of it to post process with? I would really like to get at least 8x10 out of it if I can without a huge cost or amount of work.

You might try calling Wolfe Camera, or one of the other printing services and see what they say. I would imagine it would probably need a Professional interpolation program for sake of quality.

I have had small images printed in 8x10 with no problems and they look great. I guess it really depends on your expectations of image quality. I feel you should be able to get an 11x14 print with the current image and still have it look great using wolf prints or some other online place.

I am real critical of my prints and usually I think someting is not very good while other people think its awesome.

No problem just scan it in at 300dpi. This should give you good enough resolution to get you an 8x10.

I wish. All I have is a flat bed scanner, and so far I've been unimpressed. The scan I am working with came from Wolf when I had the film developed. I guess I'll go back and ask if they can do a higher resolution scan.

I really want photo quality out of this--its going into a frame, and probably onto their wall.

Alright. Spoke with Wolf Camera. They can do a high res scan on the negative, up to 19.6 mb compared to the 1.3mb scans they use standard.
Which is exactly what I'm looking for. Now, here's the kicker.

They want $15.99 for one image!!!

Good deal that they can do the scan for you... I do have a slide/neg scanner..but not sure how close Mansfield is to Houston..LOL.. Hey, $15.95 - hmm...you could send it off to one of the pro labs for a DRUM scan for that price - and come out with a VERY hi-res scan....but - maybe Wolfe figures it's only ONE neg..not a batch (which they could probably pro-rate and do cheaper by the dozen...)
