Night shot questions - 08-13-2011, 01:34 PM

I started doing more work around the city, is there anything to get rid of the Halo or starring effect of lights?

Here are two examples:

In these photos I don't mind, however, in the future I might want to a less cluttered look.

Would a filter help, or is this something I have to do in post production?

Changing your f-stop will help. Try shooting wide open and see if that helps.(If you have a 2.8 lens, then shoot on 2.8 instead of f11)

I'm assuming that using the wide aperture will just turn the lights into a 7 or 9 sided bokeh shape (depending on how many blades your lense has)? If so, I would think that would be a much nicer look than the stars. I never really thought about it until now.

Actually I think a filter would make it worse.

how long were the exposures times? I think 30 secs or more produces those "stars."

If memory serves me correctly, the exposures were at about the 25 to 30 second range.I'd have to look back and see.
