Mine were to point the camera in the direction of the storm and shoot a few 10-15 second exposures. I think I just used a f/2.8 lens.
(I should crop this some)

10 to 15? I was thinking a bit longer with a shorter f stop, but what do I know? I haven't done it yet and I haven't seen lightning in months!
Its almost like a unicorn myth in houston.

The one I posted was f/11 on a 20sec exposure.

Be careful not to fire off too many looong exposures in a row though. My sensor started showing bad red pixels from heat.
This was shot 15 or so, almost completeluy back to back:

I usually shoot it at F8-22, AutoISO to 1600, 1"-30", M on the dial. depending on frequency of strikes. I also use a 35mm 1.8G or the 16-85VR mounted on a tripod. But since I got the AEO Lightning Strike II, I'm using much much shorter shutter speeds.

If you spend some time watching storms with a lot of lightening you can almost start to feel when strikes are going to happen.
I would use an f stop of at least 8 if not higher and then shoot it like fireworks-long exposures., Remember that you are shooting HOT spots/streaks of LIGHT and you generally don't want much of the ground other than what the lightening itself lights up captured. | | | |
