Yep. Flare control, and - more importantly in my opinion - protection. I took a spill once while commuting by bike, and my camera swung underneath my body as I went down... the lens hood snapped, but the lens was fine.

Plus, they look cool.

I never realized the difference in hood design was based on prime or zoom.

A benefit of being old: Lens hoods were included with the lens. The hood went on and stayed on during use. Unfortunately, Canon's hood attachment system eventually self-destructs and the hood no longer stays where it belongs.
