Color Changing Lights (Gym) - 10-22-2011, 07:53 AM

Has anyone encountered these so-called "color changing lights" in a gym before? I was shooting some girls volleyball at my old high school, but I'd never taken pictures in there before yesterday. Anyway before the game, my buddy and I were talking about white balance, and he was telling me that if they had those color changing lights, it's kinda hard to do anything with WB. Anyway, having not taken pics in there before I had no idea. So I get there and lo and behold....color changing lights.

Every shot changed from pink, blue, nice white, and something like a 60's photo...it was the damnedest thing I'd ever seen...

What's one do about such lighting? All I can do is adjust the WB in Lightroom after the fact...

Haha, before anyone starts to hate on me....obviously this is a flicker so fast the eye can't detect...and I'll post some pics in just a few minutes...

yes, have seen it in the past, and it's a pain, but you can work with it. You are going to have to lower your shutter speed. I think I finally found success around 1/60 yes, I know that is really really slow for sports photography. Your other option is to set up some flash units, bounce them off the ceiling or something. I'm not sure who you would have to talk to though to get permission to do that. Anyway, live and learn, have fun and good luck with your future shots.

What I wound up doing was just adjusting the white balance in Lightroom. Good thing I was shooting raw. But, as I'm sure you know, almost every one was different. I think I noticed about 4 different colors. Pink, Blue, stark white, and natural. Weird stuff.
