Where do you get your photos printed? - 01-25-2006, 02:34 AM

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm looking for a good professional online photo lab. Would like to hear how easy the upload process is and if others can order your photos from the site. Would also like a good place that prints true black & white images. Some places say they do but the tonal range just isn't there. The only place I have used is Mpix.com and so far they have been good, just wondering if I am missing out on a gem somewhere out there.
Thanks
Clint

Have you tried Pounds Photographic Labs in Dallas? They support only professional, online ordering through ftp, pros, labprints, proshots. They are also close to you so if you need something quick they are just a short drive for you.....

Recently I have been using Shutterfly for my "for fun" prints, just because I got something like 500 4x6, 300 5x7, 25 8x10 and 2 16x20 for free......

Don't laugh, but I get a lot of them done at Costco.

1. Use a reliable device to color correct your monitor.
2. Go to costco photo online and download their printer profiles by Dry Creek. Install them
3. Apply the costco profile to the photo you are editing in PhotoShop--correct image accordingly
4. Submit photos online (or bring to store on CD or CF card) and have them "turn auto correct off"

The results are DIRT cheap, and really good. Not just good for the money, but really good. Tack sharp and perfect colors on good paper (Fuji Crystal Archive). The only time I might use another lab such as RGB in Dallas is for high dollar portraits for my customers.

I use Miller's or Mpix depending on what I am using them for (Have you SEEN Miller's price for a 4 x 6? yikes)
Very happy with the results.
As far as your questions:
Uploading to Mpix is a nightmare if you have a lot of images. Before I had my tax id I was uploading weddings to them...easily taking 8 hours.
Uploading to Miller's is a dream come true. Lightning fast.
Customers will not be able to order off of either site though.
I use collages.net for online proofing, they can order through there but you have to be set up with one of their approved printers. I looked into H&H for that purpose but took one look at the complexity of their ordering process and decided I just didn't want to mess with it.

I ordered through Costco once when I was in a desperate rush to get some images back the same day. I was really unsatisfied with the results, but reading your post it looks like I should have done a few things before submitting my order.. :)
My monitor is currently calibrated to the printers at mpix and millers.

I agree with the nightmare of mpix uploads on a large number of pictures. However, I was extremely pleased with their price and turn around time. I had over 40 8 x 10's, 40 5 x 7's and 80 3x5's I uploaded them at 11pm one night and paid 5 extra for next day delivery. Fed ex brought hem the next evening around 7pm.... I really didnt expect them till the next day. other that the timely upload and crop process...MPIX.com will have my business for a while.

Having the right printer profile makes all the difference in the world. There is a seperate profile for each Costco, so make sure you get the right one, and calibrate your monitor before any important shots are ordered.

They update the profiles from time to time, so you may want to check back every so often. Also, make SURE you have autocorrect turned OFF. Otherwise, the prints will look worse than of you did nothing at all to them.

I've been very pleasantly suprised at my results.

Using MIllers and Mpix. For those quick photos, I have used Sam's in the past. They have a Fuji Frontier machine that does a good job. Also, tell them to NOT CORRECT the photos or the colors will be skewed in your prints.

I've had great results from Holland Photo in Austin. Really good lab, friendly, helpful.

I upload via ftp then pick up in person so don't know what their mailing/shipping performance is like. They have a sales frontend that you can use to resell your pictures too.

For event type work I use printroom.com

for quick, quality AND inexpensive prints, Costco rocks! Just follow the calibration / profile settings steps outlined by "boxofrocks" above.

recently tried Mpix for 20 X 16 prints -- awesome results on their metallic paper.

cheers!
