To me this article fails the beginning portrait shooter because it mentions nothing about lighting. Lighting makes or breaks it IMO whether it be working the natural lighting or adding some of your own and IMO it's more important than bokeh.

Yup it definitely lacked a lighting section. Since kit lenses are naturally soft at the widest aperture, a high lighting ratio would help tremendously with sharpness, which portrait shooters need to have complete control over.
