Had an absolute blast shooting the CyFair-CyCreek boys BB tonight. The light here is drop dead fabulous. No problem with 1/640 shutter priority at f2.8 and 2500iso. After evaluating all the WB presets, I found that daylight worked best for this arena. Canon 50d, 70-200/2.8. Here's a sample, crop and slight histogram boost.

Those look great! Just in case you didn't notice there's a kid clutching his privates in the stands over the shoulder of the guy on the left in the first pic.

Great captures. My only nit would be the white balance looks a tad off, but you really caught the action.

None of the presets were spot-on, and small WB adjustments in post are usually the best bet (for me). They'll all need a smidge of help in that area.

Well, enjoy the shoot! Shooting basketball is fun but definitely not as easy as it looks.
Shoot RAW because you really won't get a reliable WB reading with the ExpoDisk in this situation. I know; I've tried. If you want a starting place WB shoot a grey card or similar.
Honestly I'd just try a shot in Tungsten and one in Flourescent, pick the better setting an go with it. Then I've found that if I set WB in Lightroom to "auto" I will pretty quickly find a "just right" pic and I can copy that WB to everything. Still, you'll find pics in the corners (typically) that will need some tweaking.
I don't use strobes because they are too intrusive, IMHO, unless mounted high and off camera. Basketball etiquette also suggests that you stay outside the key ("the paint" area) when shooting baseball and don't shoot free throws unless you're well out of the line of sight and and sound.
I know ISO 3200 is the upper limit on the ID2 but that is going to be trouble shooting basketball with a 2.8 lens. If you have a 85/1.8 or 50/1.8 you'd probably be happier - shooting from the baseline - with those.
Get as many as you can with face, ball, goal.
Get some away from the bucket also.
Best wishes and have fun!

Thanks Gary for the pointers. I do appreciate it.
I have a 24 1.8 also so I guess Ill bring that along with me, and crop into the shot as much as I can In post in I get stuck using that the whole time.
I have not seen the lighing there but I am not holding my breath that it will be good.
Very nice shots you have there.

The 24/1.8 is going to be way too wide.
If you'd like to borrow my 85/1.8 give me a call at 282-251-1286 or e-mail me at garykohs@att.net. It's just a great lens for basketball with a 1.3 crop camera and not bad at all with a 1.6 crop.
I'm in Tomball. I can shoot my Sony A77 and Sigma 50-150 on Friday night.

I just might throw that in the bag and brush the rust off of my focusing skills
Thanks everyone for the outstanding info.
Ill post a few next week, if I get anything worthy.
Fred
