I beg to differ...this was shot remotely with a Sigma 24-60 2.8 at the Merrill Center last season...Mark IIN, ISO 1600, 2.8, 1/320 ... I wouldn't use it all the time, but there is a place for it.

If you'd like to borrow my 85/1.8 give me a call at 282-251-1286 or e-mail me at garykohs@att.net. It's just a great lens for basketball with a 1.3 crop camera and not bad at all with a 1.6 crop.

I'm in Tomball. I can shoot my Sony A77 and Sigma 50-150 on Friday night.

Fred,

As others have said basketball without strobes are a crap shoot depending on the gym. Thankfully we have a few gyms that has decent lighting, but I can count them on one hand :-).

So just shoot as you would anything else. As for the ISO most places are going to be in the 5000/6400 ISO range. If you can get a gym down to 4000 you are truly blessed with GREAT high school lighting :-(.

The bad part about lights are that they are a pain to put up for the little return you get on sales. And hassles from refs seem to be on the rise this year as compared to year's past :-(. I try not to use mine anymore unless it's going to be a tournament. Matter of fact I have used mine at all this season and the year is almost over :-).

You can not argue with the quality that they produce though. You just have to weigh the reward v. the hassle.

I heard O'Connell overhauled their gym so maybe they upgraded the lighting a little :-).

When I do strobe, I'm using my Sigma EX500s with Cactus V5 triggers...have them spaced between the lane, set on manual and +3 stops, lighting up the ceiling..shooting in the darkest gyms at 1600 ISO, 1/250, f2.8...I can provide samples...I don't like pointing the flash right at a player because the shadows are too harsh for me.

OH Boy !!!!! Went down in a blaze of glory Wasnt pretty at all. I did managed (out of pure luck I think) a few that are somewhat acceptable. The lighting was aweful, very old Gym and Several lights were not on or burned out. Havent had a chance to go thru them all, but Ill catch a few and post them so Yall can tell me WTH happened
Sure feel sorry for Oconnell, them poor folks just have a H**l of a time with them sports. Score when I left was 24-75 Bay Area C. right at the end of the 3rd quarter.
