Post-processing Books? - 02-01-2006, 01:44 PM

I'm looking to imrove my Photoshop skills and I'm looking for some good books. In addition to the books by Martin Evening and Ben Willmore, what do you suggest? I'm also interested in feedback on books that have good sections on portrait retouching.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques - Ben Willmore
Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers... - Martin Evening

I included those since they seem to be the "go to" photoshop books for those looking for something more indepth than Scott Kelby's series of books.

I'm also looking at the Restoration and Retouching book from Katrin Eismann. Any opinions on this one?

It really depends a lot on what you want to learn.

I understand the nuts and bolts of photoshop quite well, but found the 'Adobe Photoshop Masterclass' by John Paul Caponegro fantastic, in how it talked about the 'why of photoshop' rather than the 'how'. For context, I found any of the Scott Kelby books too superficial to be worth reading.

As in, it wasn't so much about which buttons to press, but why you'd want to be pressing those buttons or what you'd be trying to achieve with them.

Bit touchy feely newagy, and the second half of the book wandered off in to faking clouds and rain and snow, but the first half was fantastic.

True, but I always like to have an understanding of how to use the tools before learning the theory of the tools. Truth be know, I actually like a simultaneous teaching of the theory and the practical use of the tools but I don't usually find that so I settle for learning how to push the buttons and set the settings then I learn what those do and how to expand use of that tool orthagonally to accomplish other tasks.

I have the books by evening and wilmore which are good basic texts, however my favorite for workflow is
Adobe Photoshop CS: The Art of Photographing Women (Paperback)
by Kevin Ames, Scott Kelby
