Developing a Signature Style - 02-19-2012, 07:37 PM

The goal I've set for myself this year is to develop a unique style in my photography, kind-of like a signature.

I think it's important to discuss what establishes a 'style', and that's what I'm interested in doing here.

In my opinion, one of the most salient elements in developing a signature look is developing a consistency in your style. So what makes a style?

Some photographer's use shallow depth-of-field, leading lines, cropping, tilting the horizon, shadows, an unusual focal length, unique lighting specific to their images, etc. -- but what else makes a style? How does a photographer's portfolio 'stand out' with respect to style? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

Thanks,
Steve Masker

From what I've seen a "style" is an aspect such as you have outlined that is just repeated very often throughout images so much so that the person is identified by a group for that particular aspect in the photos.
