Ummm, what do you do after step 1? Anyone want to explain this method a little more thoroughly for me?

Ihave the same question. What exactly do do after you go to select and color range? Your answer need not be clever, only informational.

Thanks, Lanita33

Wow, that was the worst technique explanation ever...EVER!

I think the point is that you can use color selections to selectively color balance and/or increase the saturation. Nothing more, nothing less.

yes thats a pretty bad explaination or rather LACK of one. I got about the same amount of infomation from that lesson as I would have if he had said:

I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one that thought the response was "lacking" to put it nicely.

I would still like to see a step-by-step walkthrough of this process. Anyone willing?

Looking back, my post was pretty rude, and a thanks goes out the Texas Sadie for trying to add to this section, but the owners of that site need to really expand on this particular tutorial. I can piece something together to do a step-by-step, but it would only be an attempt to decipher their lack of instruction.

I use Image-selective color to tweak colour ranges.

I'll open image-selective colour and pick a set of colours (red, blue etc)

I first use the black slider to see how much of a contribution the colour range is making. Then I'll use the CMY sliders to change the selected colours.

Next, pick the next colour range. Works really well for localised (in colour range) adjustments, without having to bother using the colour range selection controls.

The biggest secret I know for making colours pop is a good understanding of colour theory. You can take it to extremes, such as the work of Warhol and Ruscha in pop art - where they used a knowledge of colour vibrancy to create some outrageous art, or you can use the same knowledge to more subtly improve the impact and dimensionality of your images.

E.g., a night scene with a dark sky and yellow/ orangy subjects can be greatly enhanced by subtly making the sky more blue - this creates a blue/yellow colour range that has a lot more visual vibrancy than might have existed. Knowing how colours play off each other can help when composing scenes, as well as when you are editing them later - is well worth learning about.

Couple of examples, the first enhanced to use colours with a vibrant relationship, the second deliberately composed to use colours with a strong relationship, the third I've enhanced the sky slightly to make it more deeply blue than it was, to contrast well with the artifically lit century plant:

great information Gordon.. much appreciated...

Anytime I use selective color (heck even an non-selective method) I loose detail... out of all the different methods you can use to boost contrast, saturation or color channel... which is the best method that maintains detail clarity?

What sort of detail are you losing ? Do you mean fine tonal differences within one range of colour ?
