What do I need to do this - 02-08-2006, 07:49 PM

Id like some opinions I want to try something this year I shoot drag racing at the starting line and 99 percent of what i shoot is at night. Id like to put my sb800 on a stand and shoot from a lot further down track maybe 100 ft or so simply because you get a much better angle on the launch shot. I know I can do it wireless, but i DONT want the sb 800 to fire off the flash on the camera. Theres too many people out there in the stands with PS cameras flashin and it would set it off (from what I understand thats is how the 800 fires when it sees the flash off the camera.

Thanks in advance heres a sample of what i shoot it sure is a rush all that Horsepoer goin by about 10 ft from you

The best solution would be a Pocket Wizard set-up. It's not cheap, but it will give you the best results. I would also recomment their MultiMax version as you have more channels to work with and if their are several photogs working the track this will give you better flexibility. Pocket Wizards

I use a Quantum wireless set up. Nice thing is that it is backward compatable, current transmitters will work with old receivers as long as they are the same frequency. You can pick up a new set and if you want to add say a second flash system on the other side you can pick up a used receiver on E-Bay fairly cheaply (just be sure it is the same frequency). Range with the antenea up is in the 300 ft range which would allow you to get down the track for some distance. Slip transmitter either in your pocket or on your belt run sync cord to the camera and get after it.
You shooting down in Ennis?

I hope I'm not wrong here, but our camera club just had a presentation on the the Nikon sbxxx series flash system. I think you need to investigate the wireless connection system between multiple sb flashes a bit more. We were told that they communicate with each other thru an IR wireless signal, and that the remote flash(s) is triggered from that signal, and not the flash from your camera flash (or other people's flashes).

There are probably some distance limitations on the wireless signal, and 100 feet may be too far away?

I don't have this flash, but am just remembering what we saw in the presentation. It looked to me like a really neat system, and a system that could really work for what you want to do.

Howdy David,

Is Larry Croft and Hutch still running the Track at Kennedale?

We used to go out there a lot, really a neat track, with some pretty hot cars!!!

Neither one is around anymore they both left ah id say 4 or 5 years ago Hutch is still Division 4 Director for NHRA but has no affiliation with TXR anymore, Larry left about the same time and wen t to Denton Dragway and ran it for a while then left there and went to No Problem Raceway in louisanna he left there last year sometime I thinlk. Texas Raceway was bought by Bill Heilscher (yep from Green Valley) Bill passed away a couple of years ago but his daughter Cindi still owns and operates it. and yep it still the same there aint nuttin like Texas Raceway on a Friday night stop by sometime on the 4th Friday of every month starting in March thats when Texas King of the Hill races, 3000 cars runnin 4.50s @ 160+, Look me up ill the one with the camera around my neck at the startin line lookin like i dont know what im doin

Thanks to all for the responses I appreciate it

Howdy David,

I thought Larry would be there until he couldn't get up in the Tower anymore.

That sounds like a blast, we will have to put that on our calendar.

Take care,

Craig

Hey David,
"Hutch" and Craig Hutchinson are two different people lol. Hutch is still seen around but your right he has no affiliation with any tracks. Craig Hutchinson will be Division director till the end of time i'd bet. I haven't heard anything on Croft's where abouts. He was a great guy to run a race. If we ever meet at a get together i'll tell ya about him letting me make a late night pass at Kennedale to see if I had a problem fixed before I left for Vegas. No lights on the track except at the scoreboards... What a rush lol

Kenny
