Notebook Computer - 02-15-2006, 09:38 AM

OK, I know that this is a stupid question. Do you load your processing software, in my case Elements 3.0, in your notebook computer? I am in the processing of purchasing a Dell XPS M140 for the purpose of image storage and light processing while away from my desktop. Any additional advice will be greatly appreciated, as I am totally in the dark in regard to laptops.

I would encourage a Dell (it'll help keep my stock up ).

I personally use a Latitude D600 w/ 2GB of RAM and it seems to work well. I would use a Wacom pad or external optical mouse, the touch pad sucks for photo editing. I use CS2 on it, but it is just a minor editing machine. I do most of my post-processing on a desktop machine, since the colors are more accurate.

Just my two cents...

I have 3 different laptops that I use as primary post processing machines.

1. HP NX9600
2. HP NX8140
3. HP TC4200 - Used on location to connect wirelessly to camera

All of them have 2gb of memory installed and 80gb hd and up. The biggest concern is memory usage in using Photoshop or Capture One. The way I resolved the issue was to maxed out the physical memory and created a 10gb partition for page file and Photoshop scratch disk. Also, unless the video driver of the notebook supports it, there is no way to calibrate the display.

We bought the Dell XPS M140 for Christmas and we love it!

We only have 512mb of ram at the moment but plan to upgrade it.

After uninstalling all the trash software it works very nice. I loaded Photoshop CS2 and it works great. I love being able to work on the photos on location now. I plan I selling my Nixvue Vista 20gb portable storage unit now.

I have never had any problems with Dell computers or the Dell service. I bought 3 Dell machines when our sons went to college and they performed excellent. The best part was if there was a problem Dell went right to our son's at college and performed any service required. Back then I could have bought a new car for what I paid for those 3 computers

Honestly, it doesnt matter if you buy Dell, HP, IBM, Fujitsu or any other brand. The internal components are all made from Foxconn, LG, Sony and Samsung. You're just buying a name brand and service. If the manufacturer offers extended warranty, get it. If they offer accidental coverage, get it. You WILL drop it. No matter how careful you are.

since we are on topic labtops. Been seeing some of the high end monitors such as wacom products which offer on screen drawing in photoshop and such. Was wondering if anyone has used any of the tablet type labtops in this configration, I am sure that the graphic abilities is probely not anywhere near that of the high end wacom products. Was just kinda of wondering how far along technology has come and if the tablets are feesable for this type of use.

I'm going to be ordering a new MacBook as well to replace my powerbook but I'm going to wait for a while. They are having some serious issues with performance.Any apps that weren't written for the Intel chipset on the apple is being run through a conversion platform called Rosetta??? Until Adobe and other 3rd party software companies actually code for the MacBook, don't expect it to be very fast.
